Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

Benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, is very common in older men. It means your prostate is enlarged but not cancerous. Many men with BPH have no symptoms. In men with symptoms, the most common include needing to urinate frequently (during the day and night), a weak urine stream, and leaking or dribbling of urine.

Prostatitis

Prostatitis is an inflammation of the prostate gland and is common in men of all ages. It may cause frequent or urgent urination, as well as difficulty with urination. Symptoms can range from pain and burning during urination to spiking fever and chills in acute prostatitis:

  • Acute bacterial prostatitis: the least common type of prostatitis; caused by several types of bacteria, but most commonly Escherichia coli (E. coli)
  • Chronic bacterial prostatitis: not a common type of prostatitis, but a recurrent bacterial infection that lasts longer (three months or longer) than acute bacterial prostatitis
  • Chronic pelvic pain syndrome: most common type of prostatitis, also known as chronic nonbacterial prostatitis (there is no infection found)
  • Asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis: an uncommon type of prostatitis that is not characterized by symptoms typical of the other forms
