Hematologic Cancer
Cancer can begin in many areas of the body, including bone, tissue, skin, and other areas. When cancer starts in the blood-forming tissue or cells of the immune system, it is classified as hematologic, or blood cancer.
What are the Different Types of Hematologic Cancers?
- Leukemia – a type of hematologic cancer that begins in the bone marrow in immature blood-forming cells that normally become red blood cells, platelets, and white blood cells. Leukemia is classified based on which cells are affected and how quickly the leukemia starts.
- Lymphoma – a cancer that begins in the cells of the immune system, which are found in various organs and parts of the body. There are two types of lymphoma, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin.
- Multiple Myeloma – cancer specific to cells in the bone marrow known as plasma cells.
